The next screenshot shows the navigation pane for an open document. The pane stays open for as long as needed and can be closed when the user wants to go back to reading the document. The user can then click any of the labels in the pane to navigate to that section of the document.

Table of contents lets users easily navigate through PDF documents that have a table of contents. The next screenshot shows the PDF reader toolbar. This section gives an overview of some important functions. They can be accessed through a pin-able toolbar at the top of PDF content. The PDF reader, built into Microsoft Edge, comes with the basic reading and navigation features, as Zoom, Rotate, Fit to page/width, jump to page, and search, among others.

XML Forms Architecture (XFA), is a legacy format of forms that isn't supported in Microsoft Edge. Note the following constraints for the current PDF reader: View Information Rights Management (IRM) protected files View Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) protected files across business tenants View Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) protected files in the same business tenant View and print local, online, and embedded PDF files The following table shows which channels and versions of Microsoft Edge support each PDF reader feature. Alternatively, PDF-XChange Viewer Portable adjusts paths, with an OCR plugin and help file available from the website as separate downloads.This article applies to Microsoft Edge version 77 or later. Reported as functional on Mac/Linux under WINE. A recommended picture-to-text OCR plugin is available (thanks Bruce) as is a PDF help file. Additional features include capturing the document with the snapshot tool (copies an area to clipboard), measuring tools for distance, area and perimeter, and more. The program supports exporting to BMP/JPEG/TIFF/PNG etc., or extracting text from a PDF page/file. Edit features include the ability to rotate documents, add comments/annotations to any PDF file, apply custom stamps from any image/PDF file/Windows clipboard, mark-up pages with text and objects, and type directly on any PDF page in "Typewriter" mode. PDF-XChange Viewer is a feature-rich program that displays multiple PDF documents within a tabbed interface. NOTE: This program has mostly been replaced by PDF-XChange Editor (also portable), which is actively updated and contains additional features.
